Does SlumberTek replace a baby monitor or camera?

It's a complement, not a replacement. SlumberTek doesn't see or hear anything — it only detects pressure. For infant safety especially, it should be used alongside other monitoring as appropriate. That said, it's excellent for alerting caregivers when a child or elder has gotten out of bed at night.

SlumberTek detects: when someone gets into bed, when they leave the bed, how long the bed has been empty, and nighttime movement patterns. It does not capture any audio or video, does not record identity, and requires nothing from the person being monitored.

SlumberTek is designed to reliably detect a single individual. If you need to monitor two people in the same bed, we recommend using two SlumberTeks — one per person.

Can SlumberTek detect if someone has fallen out of bed?

SlumberTek detects bed exits — meaning it can alert you when the bed goes from occupied to unoccupied. Paired with a Home Assistant flow or the ASC app, you can set an alert if the bed remains empty for more than a specified time (e.g., 15 minutes) during overnight hours, which serves as a practical fall or wandering indicator.

Will SlumberTek work on an adjustable bed?

Yes. Customers have used SlumberTek successfully on adjustable beds. We suggest using enough tape to secure the device and prevent it from shifting while the bed adjusts position. We recommend positioning it around mid-chest level for best detection.

SlumberTek connects to your Wi-Fi network. From there, it integrates with Home Assistant via ESPHome, or connects directly to the ASC mobile app. No hub is required.

Where should I position SlumberTek under the mattress?

Generally mid-chest or slightly below is ideal. Having the electronics enclosure near the edge of the bed (not buried in the center) gives better Wi-Fi signal and makes accessing the power cable easier. If your bed has slats, place a piece of cardboard, thin plywood, or rigid plastic over the slats before putting SlumberTek down — this creates a flat surface that can nearly double the signal quality.

Does SlumberTek work on a bed with slats?

Yes, but we strongly recommend placing a hard flat surface over the slats first — the packaging cardboard that comes with SlumberTek is perfect for this. Slats without a flat backing significantly reduce signal quality, which can hurt accuracy. With a solid surface underneath, slat beds work excellently.

Does SlumberTek require calibration?

Yes, and calibration matters. Every mattress and bed frame combination is different. The calibration process sets a baseline for your specific bed. Most users calibrate at initial setup and occasionally if they change their mattress or rearrange their bed. The device also has an auto-calibration system that adjusts itself over time based on your nightly data.

SlumberTek tries to strike a balance between being fast and responsive when you first get into bed, while also ignoring non-human weights like balled-up bedding or animals. My SlumberTek stopped detecting me after a vacation or multi-day absence. What happened?

The auto-calibration system can drift over extended periods when the bed is completely empty. If you return after a few days away and accuracy is off, a manual recalibration usually fixes it quickly. You can also increase the Auto-Calibration Trigger Sensitivity setting in the diagnostics to make the device more resilient to extended vacancies.

SlumberTek is slow to detect when I get into bed. Can I speed it up?

SlumberTek is slow to register that I got out of bed. What can I do?

This is usually related to how the sensor signal recovers after you leave the bed. Check the 'Transition to Off Delay' setting and the sensitivity sliders in the diagnostics section. Our troubleshooting video has a dedicated chapter on fixing slow out-of-bed detection.

My dog or cat keeps triggering SlumberTek. How do I fix that?

There's a dedicated section in our troubleshooting video on preventing pets from triggering SlumberTek. In general, adjusting the sensitivity threshold upward means the device requires more weight before registering occupancy — which can filter out lighter animals while still detecting people. Positioning the sensor toward the headboard side of the bed can also help, since pets tend to sleep toward the foot.

Does SlumberTek need to 'wake up' if the internet dropped?

No. SlumberTek is always listening and reconnects automatically after Wi-Fi interruptions. You don't need to do anything to restart it after a power outage or internet drop.

Is there a temperature reading in the app?

Accepted Answer

The device reports a temperature value, but this is the CPU/board temperature, not ambient room temperature. Normal operating range is roughly 95–120°F depending on your mattress thickness and the device's position. It's primarily a debugging diagnostic and isn't intended to be used as a room thermometer.

How do firmware updates work?

Home Assistant will notify you within 6–12 hours when a new firmware version is available. You can update with a single button click from the HA interface — no USB cable needed for most updates. If you restart your device, it will check for updates immediately rather than waiting.

Do I need to recalibrate after a firmware update?

It depends on the update. Major version changes often require a recalibration because the algorithm or entity structure changes. Release notes will indicate if recalibration is needed. When in doubt, a quick recalibration doesn't hurt.

The firmware installer crashes Chrome right at the end. Did the install fail?

Accepted Answer

Probably not — this is a known intermittent issue with the web-based flasher. After Chrome relaunches, reconnect to the device and you should see the option to configure Wi-Fi credentials, which means the firmware installed successfully. If you're not sure, check the device version in Home Assistant under Settings > Devices.

My SlumberTek keeps disconnecting from Home Assistant. What can I try?

Wi-Fi connectivity is the most common issue. The device uses a compact ESP32 antenna that can be affected by mattress materials and distance from your router. Try: positioning the electronics enclosure closer to the edge of the bed, using a dedicated 2.4GHz network with a fixed channel, or adding a nearby Wi-Fi extender or mesh node. Avoid having the electronics buried under thick foam layers if possible.

Yes. SlumberTek works well with mesh systems and dedicated 2.4GHz networks. If you're experiencing stability issues, setting a fixed IP address and fixed Wi-Fi channel can help. Using a separate SSID for your IoT devices (2.4GHz only) is also a common recommendation.

Can I use SlumberTek to monitor an infant or young child?

SlumberTek can detect when a child gets out of bed and is a great low-friction way to get a nighttime alert if they wander. It should not be used as a primary infant safety device in place of a dedicated baby monitor — it doesn't detect breathing or fine movement within the bed. Particularly wiggly sleepers have been known to move to areas of the bed that the sensor doesn't cover, which can occasionally trigger a false exit alert.

How far away can a caregiver be and still get alerts?

As long as you have an internet connection, alerts from the ASC app can reach you anywhere in the world. Long-distance caregivers are a core use case — you can be in another city and still get a push notification if your parent's bed has been empty for 20 minutes at 2am.
